Slow Water Filtering System
We, human now are facing worldwide water crisis.
According to Water.org There are
billion in needed. Their typical image would be:

And even in our backyard Haiti:
The system is designed as one method of water treatment to transform
'not so clean' into fit for human consumption.
Thanks God! There are efforts including big names (Bil Gates, Bill Clinton etc. . . ) to tackle the problem specially for those live in the deep and the far and they mostly concentrate in well drilling, pumps and in the large scale for the whole community. Also according to water.org, most of those projects fail within the first few years.
However very
little has been done on water filtering in smaller scale. We only try
to work on this problem.
There are a lot of discussion about benefits of slow water
filtering using sand, gravel, but most important is the layer of fungus.
Here we are not discussing about the technology. its benefits
had been proven. We rather concentrate in one method to regulate the
water of the upper tank, preventing it from dried up in order to keep
the fungus alive. Without it, the water may look clear but do not have
the benefit of filtering bacteria.
Understanding the S-Siphon.
This
is
the
core
of
the
innovation.
To understand how it works we need to have our mind open to the
new
concept of S-siphoning.
Let's look at the following image.
- At the first system the water will stop run down when the water levels of the two tanks are on the same horizontal plan.
- If you look at the second system water will stop run down when the water level of the lower tank plus the height of the air column is equal or higher then the water level of the upper tank.
Now we putting them all together as illustrated below.
The advantages of the system are:
- Keep the upper tank always wet.
- Only allowing water to go through filter on demand.
- Fit for family or few families size installation
- Very useful in super rural area, the poor, the under privileged
